Think About Your Health!

How many Christmas parties have you visited so far this season? I’ve visited at least a dozen – a couple as a guest and a few in my role as a singer with the Original Dickens Carolers in Colorado. And there are plenty more to come. How, during this festive season, do you keep from making too many bad dietary choices?

First, I should say you should probably not stress out about your diet during the season of celebration. You should indulge a little. Balance is great; and it’s important to balance having a longer, more vital life with having one that’s worth living!

But you know you’re going to get to mid-January and wonder “What the heck was I thinking? Did I really need ALL that egg-nog, and ALL those yummy cookies?”

You need SOME, of course, to be happy. Tons and tons, though, you don’t need.

It turns out research has been conducted into how your brain processes food choices. According to this July’s “Journal of Neuroscience,” when you decide what to eat, not only does your brain need to calculate how it feels about the food’s taste versus its health benefits (versus size of portion, packaging, etc.), but it needs to weigh the importance of each of these attributes relative to the others; and it has to do all this pretty-much instantly.

As reported in the Journal, scientists looked at getting their research subjects simply to think about healthiness, and then gauged their food choices. When people thought about healthiness, they were less likely to choose unhealthy foods, whether or not they deemed them to be tasty. And they were more likely to choose even un-tasty (but healthy) foods than they were when the topic of health was not top-of-mind. Being asked just to THINK about healthiness led the subjects to say “no” to certain foods more often than they otherwise would’ve.

So before you step into that next treat-fest, give your brain a chance to think about your personal health and vitality. Read an article (like this one!), or listen to a health program on the radio in the car on your way to the party. Maybe, just reflect about how you’d like to feel in January, when the holiday season is a warm and happy memory… you don’t want to be sluggish and bloated, do you? You’ll want to jump into the happy new year with a renewed sense of optimism and energy toward your business, your work, your mission, and your life.

So don’t pig out. Think about your health!

What you choose to eat is part of the five key daily health habits I call “The NEWSS:” Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements. Make sure you’re also getting 3-6 workouts a week, two liters of water a day, eight hours of sleep a night, and at least one good daily multi-nutrient supplement. Do reasonably well on all five of those habits, and you’ll have many happy, festive holiday seasons to come.
