Every time we eat, the food breaks down into molecules which the body uses. But not all the particles go down completely and some of these remnants go to the larges intestine where it ferments. These remnants will then produce a variety of gases, which consist mostly of odorless vapors such as hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sometimes methane. The disagreeable odor is caused by a bacteria trapped in the large intestine that contains sulfur, which then releases small amounts of gas. But gas can also come from swallowed air. This usually happens when we eat or drink. An increase of air intake is possible when we eat and drink speedily, smoke or when you are chewing a gum. The most common way these gases leave the stomach is through belching or burping. The gases that made their way to the large intestine are released through the rectum.

Also called as intestinal gases, it causes chest pain, belching, abdominal bloating and pain and flatulence. But these symptoms are not the same with everybody. Some might experience a higher level of discomfort comfort to others. The fatty acids our body absorbs can also be a factor. It is but normal to sometimes experience sporadic burping during or after a meal. The frequency might depend on the amount of air we have swallowed during the process.

Some common causes of stomach gas are high fiber food, pregnancy, flying, menstrual cycle and carbonated drinks such as softdrinks and soda. It is also common in small babies, which can be caused by a few aspects. Babies have a tendency to gulp air during feeding. Crying can also cause an excessive gas intake. The natural sugar – lactose, present in the milk they drink, also causes intestinal gas.
